How often should a septic tank be pumped?
Every three to five years for a typical household, but it depends on tank size and occupancy. Two people on a large tank can go longer; six people on a small one cannot.
Does pumping fix a failing drain field?
No. Pumping empties the tank, which can relieve a backup temporarily, but if the field has failed the tank refills and the problem returns within weeks. Anyone promising otherwise is selling you a pump-out you will need again shortly.
Do additives reduce how often I need pumping?
There is no good evidence for that. Solids still accumulate and still have to be physically removed.
